The Sony 135mm f1.8 GM delivers exceptional resolution and creamy bokeh on the α7 IV, making it a top choice for portrait and event photographers.
Quick answer
The Sony 135mm f1.8 GM is an excellent telephoto prime for the α7 IV, offering outstanding sharpness and smooth bokeh that elevate portrait and event photography.
Why the 135mm focal length works on the α7 IV
The α7 IV’s 33-megapixel sensor demands lenses that resolve fine detail, and the 135mm GM delivers. Its fast f/1.8 aperture also helps maintain a fast shutter speed in low-light event settings, reducing motion blur without pushing ISO too high.
Trade-off: weight and handling
At roughly 950 g, the 135mm GM is heavier than standard zooms. On the α7 IV, the combination is well-balanced for a telephoto prime, but you may notice the weight during long handheld sessions. A monopod or a comfortable strap helps.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the autofocus perform with the α7 IV?
- The 135mm GM uses Sony’s XD linear motors and a floating focus system, which pair with the α7 IV’s phase-detection AF for fast, quiet acquisition. Eye AF is reliable for moving subjects in continuous shooting.
- Is the bokeh really that smooth?
- Yes. The 11-blade circular aperture and the lens’s optical design produce smooth, creamy out-of-focus areas with minimal onion-ring texture. Specular highlights stay round even when stopped down slightly. If you shoot wide open at f/1.8, the bokeh is especially soft and uniform.
- Can I use it for events or sports?
- The 135mm focal length is excellent for stage performances, ceremonies, and indoor sports where you can stay at a reasonable distance. The f/1.8 aperture helps in dim venues, but for fast action you may want a zoom with faster subject tracking. For fast-paced outdoor sports, consider a 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom instead.
